After just eight games many "experts" already had the Motnreal Canadians favorites to win the East. Last night the Habs and their supporters got a rude wake up call from the Chicago Blackhawks, getting stomped 5-0 at home in what can only be viewed as a humiliating defeat. However if we stop and take a look at things, the Habs have been lucky to come out of their first 8 games with just a single loss. The Habs at the end of October ranked just 12th in terms of goals scored per game, a total that's not going to be helped by the fact they were shut out at home. So they must be scoring like crazy right? Wrong. They rank 17th in goals allowed per game, again a ranking that will likely plummet after giving up 5 unanswered to the Blackhawks. So what is it then that has allowed Montreal to reach such early success? Our best guess is simply luck. The Canadians have gotten goals when they needed them, but that kind of play isn't sustainable over a long period of times, and that's why experienced veteran teams that have been there before, like the Boston Bruins always come out on top in the end. Since starting their season 7-1 the Habs have accumulated just one win over their last 4 games, meanwhile Boston despite being decimated by injury sits just one spot behind them in the standings and is poised to overtake them once key players like Chara make their return.
