After acquiring netminder Cal Peterson as part of their significant return Tuesday in a three-team trade, talks have emerged out of Philadelphia that the Flyers are engaged in discussions around goalie Carter Hart, listening to propositions from around the league. The Flyers appear to be ready to part ways with Hart is scheduled for restricted free agency next summer. The 24-year-old goaltender is going into the last of a three-year, $11.937 million deal and has a cap hit of $3.979 million for the 2023-24 season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers have already been mentioned as potentially being interesting in inquiring about Hart and on Wednesday, Elliotte Friedman dressed a list of other teams who could be linked to the young goalie in the near future. On the 32 Thoughts podcast with Jeff Marek, Friedman mentioned how the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks and Montreal Canadiens could get in the mix.

“You know which team I really wonder about here with Carter Hart? The San Jose Sharks. That’s a team that doesn’t want to take a step back, you know they really have to start to turn this team over, there’s not going to be a classic tear down..”

“Lot of people are talking Buffalo and I think Buffalo is just going to be rumoured in every goaltender deal until they come out and say either we’re making a trade or we’re going with what we have”.

“I think there is going to be some teams here we haven’t thought about, you know someone suggested to me MTL maybe, they have Jake Allen for another year, Montembeault had a really good season and a really good WHC, but Hart’s got a high ceiling.”

Friedman denied that the Ottawa Senators have interest but almost mentioned how the Flames might need to have a conversation with Jacob Markstrom about the goaltending situation in Calgary. The insider does not believes the Pittsburgh Penguins will enter the sweepstakes.

“I just wonder at the very least if Calgary and Markstrom have a conversation and Markstrom has complete control and I know this is going to burn up the city of Calgary but I just don’t think Conroy is doing his job if he doesn’t at least have that conversation”.

Friedman is adamant that the goalie market is going to get hot this summer. And if things kick off with Carter Hart, who knows what other significant trades can happen this offseason!?
