We all know that the Toronto Maple Leafs have to make retooling chances in order to finally get a long playoff run and get a shot at the freaking third round of the postseason. General manager Brad Treliving is therefore considering pretty much everything on the table, and according to Nick Kypreos, that includes looking at the trade market for defenseman Morgan Rielly.

Kypreos revealed on Friday morning on the air of Sportsnet 590 that Rielly’s future in Toronto is being questioned which means the Maple Leafs could seriously look into moving him in the coming months.

“His name is out there; I believe those discussions are being had; I don’t anticipate anything imminent; it may take time to come to that conclusion that it’s best for all parties.”

Though the latest rumour emerges on Draft Day, there isn’t a belief that a major trade involving Rielly is imminent. After all, he is the longest-tenured Maple Leaf on the roster and carries a full no-move clause for the five years remaining on his contract.

There is some chatter that the Maple Leafs and GM Treliving have no intention of asking him to waive it, though if an offer comes there is a sense that this could be a way to immediately change Toronto’s DNA moving forward.

Rielly had a difficult start to the season under new head coach Craig Berube, posting 19 points and a -10 rating through his first 41 games. He later improved into the season, putting up 22 points and a plus-two rating in the second half of the year. And he did not miss a single game.

In the postseason, Rielly recorded points in the first three games of both the first and second round but failed to get on the scoresheet later on in each series. He had a playoff-low minus-three rating in Toronto’s season-ending Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers.

Not sure what the future looks like for Rielly with this new rumour on the table. Let’s see how the summer unfolds, especially in Toronto.
