Growing belief around the organization suggests major conversations are now unavoidable…
Another significant change could be coming for the Toronto Maple Leafs this offseason and it may involve one of the most recognizable names in the organization.
On Wednesday morning, the Leafs fired head coach Craig Berube, and more stunning departures could follow.
According to comments discussed by insider Darren Dreger on First Up 1050, there is growing belief that Toronto will at least approach Morgan Rielly about the possibility of exploring trade opportunities this summer.
The situation appears tied to a broader organizational shift following another disappointing season and the arrival of general manager John Chayka into the front office structure. The Leafs are believed to want a full evaluation of where Rielly stands moving forward and whether a fresh start could ultimately benefit both sides.
“It feels like it’s time to move him out and give him a fresh start and see what we can get for this player,” Dreger said during the discussion.
Rielly reportedly pushed hard for another opportunity to prove himself and vowed he would bounce back after a difficult stretch. But despite those intentions, the season did not unfold the way either side had hoped.
Now, speculation surrounding his future is intensifying.
A trade involving Rielly would not be simple. The veteran defenseman carries significant trade protection, and his personal and family situation adds another layer of complexity to any potential move. Still, the growing sense around the organization is that conversations that once seemed impossible may now be on the table.
Rielly has been a foundational piece of the Leafs for more than a decade and remains one of the most respected figures in the dressing room. But with Toronto entering another pivotal offseason and pressure mounting for meaningful change, difficult decisions may be unavoidable.
