Moritz Seider ties Red Wings history

What a night it was for the sophomore defenseman.

The Detroit Red Wings were able to break through offensively in a big way last night at Little Caesars Arena against the visiting Winnipeg Jets, torching Michigan native goaltender Connor Hellebuyck for six goals before adding another into the empty net over the course of a back and forth 7-5 final score.

And it was four assists from sophomore defenseman Moritz Seider, the reigning Calder Trophy winner as the National Hockey League's top rookie, that helped make it possible.

“My game is still better than last year,” Seider said. “So even though the production isn’t there yet, I still think I’m playing a better overall game than last year.”

And thanks to his four helpers, Seider tied a franchise record for most assists in a game by a defenseman since Mike Green accomplished the feat in 2017. He also became the 4th active defenseman aged 21 or younger to register a four assist game.

“I think when you look at our games, we are playing really strong defensively,” Seider said. “Sometimes it’s just tough bounces. You go on the ice right away and you get scored on. It’s a tough stat.”

After having played most of the season with veteran Ben Chiarot, Seider has recently been paired for the past several games with Jake Walman, who has nothing but good things to say about his new partner.

“You can see it anywhere on the ice,” Walman said of Seider. “I try to give him the puck and then in the O-zone, I think we work well that way. I kind of feed off him, he feeds off me and the biggest thing I’ve noticed is in the D-zone. I try to be tenacious, but I love watching him battle guys. He’s a beast.”

The Red Wings are back in action tomorrow night against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and they'll be looking to avenge their two losses at the hands of their Atlantic Division and Original 6 rivals this season.
