The Flames’ offseason has not gone the way management planned… Full story below:
The Calgary Flames have had a quiet offseason to date and it’s not what general manager Craig Conroy was hoping for. The Flames have been on an ongoing retooling stage at this point and have not had any big free-agent signings or significant trades, giving the opportunity to their younger players to compete for roster spots in training camp. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman has revealed on his 32 Thoughts podcast that the Flames have attempted to make far more, and far bigger moves than many realize.
“I think the Flames have low-key taken some bigger swings than we fully realize, especially on defence,” Friedman said. “I heard they thought about some things that were bigger than we realized.
“This was supposed to be a big summer for the Flames. Before the cap jumped, they were one of the few teams with room. I think they were really hoping to take advantage of that. But now more people had room, and it made it harder to take advantage of. I think [Craig] Conroy was sneakily trying some bigger things that didn’t come to fruition.”
A lot of chatter has also surrounded defenseman Rasmus Andersson, who has reportedly been looking for a fresh start elsewhere and has received interest from different rival teams across the league. But it’s understandable that Conroy would not want to let him go for a small return. Andersson is believed to have a specified a short list of teams he would sign a long-term extension, and perhaps no move has yet to come in that regard with the Flames looking for the best deal.
However it sure feels like some moves have fallen through on what Friedman calls “bigger things that didn’t come to fruition.”
As of now according to Puck Pedia, the Flames do still boast over $15 million in cap space and could be making interesting moves though the free-agent frenzy has died down…
Let’s see what Conroy has in store and if it can work this time around.
