An ugly return since the Olympic break may very well cost several members of the Toronto Maple Leafs their spot on the roster.
The Maple Leafs have looked awful coming back from the National Hockey League's Olympic break in the month of February and it sounds like that may have some severe repercussions for the players on the roster. It was NHL insider Elliotte Friedman who shared his insight into the situation on Monday when he made it clear that the perception from the Leafs front office has changed drastically as a result of this current 3 game losing streak.
"I think right before the Olympics they were like 'Ok, this is not gonna be our year, let's talk about the UFAs' and now it's 'This is not gonna be our year and it's really not our year.," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
According to Friedman it sounds like the conversation has moved from potentially trading away pending unrestricted free agents to trading away anyone that will fetch a return the Leafs will be happy with.
"You get to a point where you almost say, and this is what I think has happened, you say 'Let's just say to teams, talk to us, talk to us about our guys,'" revealed Friedman. "That's kind of what happened in Vancouver, Vancouver sent out an email earlier in the year... and a couple of weeks later Quinn Hughes was gone."
To be clear Friedman isn't predicting a blockbuster trade deal, specifically naming both Auston Matthews and William Nylander as players who are not likely to be traded.
"I don't think there's gonna be anything like that, I don't think Matthews or Nylander are going anywhere right now, but I do think Toronto wants to know 'What's the market for our guys,'" said Friedman.
Most interestingly of all however were Friedman's comments that there may be something big coming down the pipeline.
"I think at the very least it raises the possibility that they could do something this week that surprises us," said Friedman. "I don't know what I would say the percentage of that is, but I do think it's possible."
