“My job should be in question right now”

Head coach on the hot seat alert!

It is still early in the 2018-19 season, however, it doesn't take that long to realize that some National Hockey League teams are not doing as well as it was first expected. And, with the end of the first month of the campaign comping to an end, it might be time to make major changes to ensure things can be turned around before it's too late. The Los Angeles Kings, Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers and St. Louis Blues are dealing with the heat, but the latter is the one with their head coach on the hot seat.

Because even Mike Yeo himself says he should be fired...

On Thursday night, after taking an early 2-0 lead against the Columbus Blue Jackets, the club surrendered four straight goals en route to a 7-4 loss. It felt like the story was repeating itself: in their last game on Monday, the Blues also coughed up a two-goal lead, losing to the Winnipeg Jets.

Thursday's loss puts the Blues just two points out from last place in the Central Division. And that's not the way it was supposed to be... Expectations were high for St. Louis, who made impressive changes this summer, adding forwards Ryan O'Reilly, Tyler Bozak, and Patrick Maroon to their roster. Now, Yeo admits his job should be on the line after their rough start.

"Heck, my job should be in question right now," Yeo said, according to The Athletic's Jeremy Rutherford. "Of course that comes with the trade. But I'm not going to coach to try to save my job. I'm going to coach to try to win the Stanley Cup. I believe in this group, so whatever we need every single day, I'm going to try to do that."

Yeo's players aren't ready to blame the head coach for their failures. They were quick to defend him after the heartbreaking loss on Thursday.

"There is no question, anyone thinking he (does) not deserve to be here, we support him," Vladimir Tarasenko said of Yeo. "We believe in him, that's why he's our coach right now, and we will (fu-----) play for him so hard. So there's no question about (whether the) team doesn't believe in the coach."

There is some positive: the Blues still manage to tally some goals: hey've scored the third-most goals in their division this season.

However they've also given up the most in the Central Division and the third-most league-wide. There is much room for improvement.

GM Doug Armstrong left the arena before Yeo made his surprising comments last night, so for now, it seems like the Blues GM does not agree with his head coach.

For now.
