Secrets and surprises still surround the lineup…
As Team Canada gears up for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano Cortina, a cloud of mystery hangs over the roster. GM Doug Armstrong confirmed that Hockey Canada has a “stand-by” list in case injuries hit the main roster, but details remain tightly under wraps.
Armstrong wouldn’t reveal how many players are on the list, only describing it as “long, but not too long.” Players under consideration as injury replacements will have the choice to remain in the testing program if they want to be eligible, keeping their Olympic hopes alive.
One name that could be on that elusive list is 18-year-old Matthew Schaefer. Prior to the official roster announcement, a reliable source told Ken Campbell that Schaefer had not made the team. But the young defenseman has already made history: he became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to reach 25 career points at just 18 years and 116 days old.
Schaefer’s 2025 No. 1 overall pick status is translating into impressive production this season, with nine goals and 16 assists for 25 points. His talent is undeniable, but apparently not enough yet to crack the Olympic roster.
With the Olympics approaching, all eyes will be on this mysterious standby list. Who will step up if an injury occurs? Could the list involved the names of snubbed players who didn’t get the call, like forwards Sam Bennett, Travis Konecky and Seth Jarvis, defensemen Evan Bouchard or Jakob Chychrun, and perhaps goalie Mackenzie Blackwood?
And could a young phenom like Schaefer get the call of a lifetime? For now, fans can only speculate.
