He's right back where he started.
Former Edmonton Oilers 1st round Draft selection Nail Yakupov will likely go down as one of the all-time biggest busts in National Hockey League history, as he failed to even remotely live up to the expectations that came with his high draft position
It wouldn't be long before he was out of the NHL, signing with SKA Saint Petersburg of the KHL. Since then, he's also played for Amur Khabarovsk along with Avangard Omsk. But now, he's signed a contract back with his 1st KHL club of HC Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk.
Last year, former Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk ripped Yakupov as "a complete idiot".
“Oh, Nail Yakupov, this guy was an idiot. A complete idiot," Dubnyk said. "I tried to explain to him. We were doing a low-drive from the corner and he’s zipping these things past my ear because he’s trying to hit the elbow. And I tried to explain to him: ‘You realize there’s three outcomes here. You miss the net, you score, or you hit me in the ear. I hate all three of those. If you want to practice this shot, go do it on the other end.”
Oh, what could have been for Yakupov.
