The situation between Dylan Larkin and the Detroit Red Wings appears to have taken a significant turn, and not in a positive direction.

According to multiple reports, including comments from Sean Shapiro, communication between Larkin and Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman has become extremely limited.

“They don’t speak unless they’ve had to, they haven’t spoken in a while,” Shapiro said, highlighting what appears to be a growing disconnect between the captain and the organization’s top decision-maker.

The development comes amid reports that Larkin has formally requested a trade from Detroit after 11 seasons with the franchise.

Sources indicate the 29-year-old center has provided a short list of preferred destinations, including the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights.

Because Larkin holds a full no-trade clause, he ultimately controls his landing spot, giving him significant leverage in any potential deal. However, GM Yzerman has yet to finalize any move, with negotiations complicated by the high asking price reportedly set by the Red Wings.

Larkin remains under contract through the 2030–31 season at an $8.7 million cap hit. The deal, however, is heavily front-loaded, meaning his actual salary decreases in the later years, making him an appealing long-term asset despite his trade request.

The challenge for Detroit is twofold: finding a return that matches Larkin’s value, while also working within the limited list of teams he is willing to join.

At the same time, those teams, including Florida, Minnesota, and Vegas, have all made significant roster moves in recent seasons, leaving them with thinner trade capital than in previous years.

Earlier this week, Pierre LeBrun added another layer to the situation, suggesting that if a resolution hasn’t already happened, Yzerman may be forced to revisit Larkin’s list and potentially expand it.

“My prediction… if it hasn’t already happened, Steve Yzerman will go back to Dylan Larkin’s camp and extend that list,” LeBrun said as some insiders have reported that three more teams have made the cut, potentially including the Anaheim Ducks, Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders.

For now, the standoff continues but the lack of communication between captain and GM suggests this situation may make this worse…
