Watch it here:
Shane Wright said it: he’s got a chip on his shoulder as the projected top prospect all season long wasn’t taken first by the Montreal Canadiens. New Jersey passed on him for second and Arizona chose Logan Cooley at No. 3.
When the Habs called out Juraj Slafkovsky’s name, Wright did a good job hiding his disappointment. Same goes when the Devils chose puck-moving defenseman Simon Nemec. Clearly, Wright saw himself being drafted by the Arizona Coyotes and had built up hope after being ignored with the two first picks. Most predictions saw him being drafted ahead of Cooley, therefore there was reason to believe that he would be their choice since both Cooley and Wright play down the middle. But the Coyotes went with Cooley… Wright fell to the Seattle Kraken at fourth overall after being considered a consensus first pick for the past several years. Before his name was called out as he watched Cooley walking to the podium, Wright’s true feelings emerged and were caught on camera. He turned to his agent and couldn’t help but admit “that hurt”.
In a video posted by the NHL in which they offer behind the scenes footage of the first round of the draft with several top prospects mic’ed up, fans have now been able to see the reactions of Wright, who felt hurt after Slafkovsky, Nemec and Cooley completed the top three.
Wright still managed to keep it together and stayed focused on the Kraken, who called out his name. While he was accused of sending a death stare at the Canadiens’ table, the top forward was only happy to enter the big leagues.
“I’m great,” Wright said when asked about his reaction to the pick. “I was drafted by NHL franchise. I was drafted by a team with a lot of potential with a great city and a great fan base.”
That’s the right attitude to take on, though we cannot blame the kid. We all are humans.
