Wayne Gretzky speaks out after the controversial incident at the Olympic Games.
There has been a bit of controversy surrounding legendary hockey player Wayne Gretzky and Hockey Canada stemming from the Gold Medal game at the recent 2026 Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy.
Ahead of the Gold Medal game, the man known simply as "The Great One" was scheduled to read out the lineup for the Canadians. It was no doubt meant to be a moment that inspired the players in the Canadian locker room, but unfortunately that moment would never come to be. Gretzky did his part and showed up to do his job but was reportedly turned away and informed that he was not allowed to enter the locker room.
On Saturday, National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman provided more insight into the unfortunate situation and it was yet another great show of class from Gretzky that would shine through. According to Friedman, Greyzky's priority in this matter is simply to let the entire thing die and avoid any additional embarrassment for Hockey Canada.
"There was a story this week about whether or not he was blocked by Hockey Canada to go in and read the lineup before the Gold Medal game," confirmed Friedman on Hockey Night in Canada. "He reached out and I think he just wants to put this to bed, I don't think he wants this story to continue."
You'll notice that at no point does Friedman refute the claim that Gretzky was indeed blocked by Hockey Canada nor does Gretzky himself in the statements that were relayed by Friedman. Despite this it appears as though Gretzky is taking the high road on this matter.
"He said he was treated very well by Hockey Canada this week, him and his family, but what he did say is that there was some kind of misunderstanding before the Gold Medal game," revealed Friedman. "He went down to ice level and an IOC security person didn't recognize Wayne Gretzky and told him he couldn't be there, so he just left."
Although Gretzky could certainly make a big stink about something like this if he decided to, it sounds like he is doing the exact opposite.
"I don't think he wanted Hockey Canada taking any heat that they didn't deserve to take," concluded Friedman.
A very interesting story to be sure but good on Wayne Gretzky for taking the high road and once again showing why he is known as "The Great One."
