The tenure of goaltender Jack Campbell with the Edmonton Oilers has not gone according to plan, however, it may be start for a new chapter in 2024. In the AHL, where he’s been hanging out and trying to find a new confidence, Campbell is now 4-0-0 in his last four starts with a .936 save % with the Bakersfield Condors.

The Oilers are on a roll lately and it would be foolish to suggest any changes to their goaltending situation, however, fans and pundits are always quick to point out that Stuart Skinner may not be able to keep this up, especially at the crucial time of the postseason.

While some chatter emerged after the signing of forward Corey Perry that Campbell, who signed a hefty five year, $25 million deal after a mostly successful tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs, could be let go by the Oilers, there is also a sense that he could be kept around, and eventually brought back to Edmonton to ensure a long playoff run.

It would be smart to wait and see how Campbell keeps going in the AHL before making any rash decision on the goaltending situation, however, knowing how Skinner could get tired and inconsistent and how foolish general manager Ken Holland can be with roster calls, this will be one to watch.

The possibility of getting rid of Campbell remains on the table as well. The Oilers could consider buying out Campbell’s deal but the fallout from such a move would impact the salary cap for the next six seasons. This would mean a cap hit of $1.1 million next season, per Cap Friendly, and you may think that’s not too bad. But it goes up from there: the following two seasons would see cap hits of $2.3 million and $2.6 million respectively, due to the front-loaded nature of the deal. After this, the final three seasons would see the Oilers take an annual cap hit of $1.5 million.

And so the idea of giving him another shot, especially if Skinner needs it, isn’t that far-fetched…

Would you give Soup another shot this season?
