Paul Maurice says this is the most likely timeline, although it "could be a little less, could be a little more.”
The Florida Panthers have been holding their breath ever since Aleksander Barkov left last Thursday's game against the San Jose Sharks with a left leg injury. But the update that arrived on Tuesday brought a measure of relief to the organization and its fanbase.
Head coach Paul Maurice confirmed that Barkov will miss approximately six to eight weeks with the injury, and crucially, the star center will not require surgery.
"That's our best estimate. It could be less or it could be a little more," Maurice said.
That timeline would have him returning around Christmas/New Years.
Barkov suffered the injury during a bad fall in the second period in San Jose. He got back to his feet on his own but headed straight to the locker room and appeared visibly frustrated. He did not return to the ice for the remainder of the contest.
The fact that no operation is needed represents a significant silver lining for the Panthers, especially given Barkov's recent injury history. The three-time Frank J. Selke Trophy winner played just two games last season after sustaining a serious right knee injury during training camp.
At 29, Barkov remains the heartbeat of Florida's lineup. His leadership and two-way dominance are virtually irreplaceable, and the Panthers will need to tread water during his absence.
The six-to-eight-week window, if it holds, would put Barkov's potential return somewhere in the second half of the regular season. That timeline gives the team reason for cautious optimism, though Maurice made it clear the recovery could shift in either direction.
The Panthers will have to lean on their depth down the middle while their captain works his way back. Given how last season unfolded with a similarly lengthy absence, Florida at least has some experience navigating life without their most important player.
