New Stanley Cup contender enters the Dylan Larkin sweepstakes

A new trade destination has surfaced as Steve Yzerman remains trapped by a complicated situation.

It has been roughly two months since Dylan Larkin formally asked out of Detroit, and the Red Wings captain still has not gone anywhere. General manager Steve Yzerman has reportedly struggled to find a trade package worth pulling the trigger on, and the situation has grown increasingly complicated.

But a new wrinkle has emerged. Elliotte Friedman recently floated the idea of Larkin landing with the Carolina Hurricanes, suggesting the fit between the two sides makes a lot of sense. While the idea of such a move is enticing, Larkin would need to adjust his no-trade list to make it happen.

The 29-year-old center holds a full no-movement clause in his contract, which gives him total authority over his next destination. According to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press, Larkin's current trade list consists of just three teams: the Florida Panthers, the Vegas Golden Knights, and the Minnesota Wild.

Carolina is not on that list, at least not yet.

The situation is further tangled by the financial side of things. Larkin carries an $8.7 million annual cap hit, and reportedly none of his three preferred destinations currently have enough salary cap room to absorb that number without significant roster maneuvering.

That combination of a short, rigid trade list and a substantial salary has effectively boxed Yzerman into a corner. The Detroit GM is said to be looking for players who can help right away rather than prospects or future draft picks, which only narrows the pool of realistic trade partners even more.

Larkin's desire to move on is rooted in his hunger for postseason success. Since entering the league with Detroit in 2015-2016, he has reached the playoffs just once. His on-ice resume certainly supports the ambition. He has rattled off five straight 30-goal seasons, including 34 goals and 33 assists for 67 points across 74 games this past year.

Friedman's suggestion that Carolina could be a strong landing spot adds an intriguing layer to a trade saga that has otherwise felt stuck. The Hurricanes have been a perennial contender in recent years, and a center of Larkin's caliber could elevate their roster further.

The ball remains in Larkin's court. Unless he decides to expand his list of acceptable destinations, this standoff between player and franchise could stretch deeper into the offseason with no resolution in sight.
