The captain is taking his time, and it could have big implications for the Oilers.
Contract discussions for Connor McDavid are underway, but the star forward and the Edmonton Oilers are taking a different approach than anyone could have anticipated. According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, both sides are going down a more philosophical approach rather than hurrying into figures, describing the talks as ongoing and collaborative, with no “lines in the sand” as the insider emphasizes that numbers aren’t the sticking point.
“There have not really been concrete numbers exchanged because that part of it I think everyone feels will be the easiest part if and when Connor McDavid is ready to do his extension. That will be a five-minute discussion between the agent and management because that’s not what this is about.”
Instead, the focus is on McDavid’s comfort and vision for the team moving forward. He wants clarity on Edmonton’s future, what the roster will look like beyond this season, and the best path toward a Stanley Cup. After back-to-back losses in the Final to the Florida Panthers, the sting of falling just short has only sharpened the urgency surrounding both the team and its captain, whose contract situation looms large over the season.
LeBrun still believes that patience is part of the process here and notes that fans shouldn’t panic if a deal isn’t completed immediately.
“If I’m an Oilers fan, obviously I wish this was done by now and it may be done by puck drop next month. But it also may not be. And if that’s the case, everyone has to understand that Connor McDavid will green-light his agent when he feels comfortable green-lighting his agent to go to the next phase.”
McDavid has been transparent with the media about his priorities: winning in Edmonton and ensuring any extension aligns with both his personal goals and the team’s long-term vision.
For now, fans, pundits prefer to focus on the positive and the fact that the discussions remain cordial and ongoing, and the expectation is that once McDavid is ready, the financial side will be a formality.
This isn’t about money : it’s about the right fit, the right timing, and ensuring both McDavid and the Oilers are aligned for the future.
