New update on Joel Quenneville’s return to the NHL

It’s been known for several weeks now that Joel Quenneville is ready to return behind an NHL’s bench. He has reportedly undergone the necessary work, assigned by commissioner Gary Bettman, after he resigned in disgrace from the Florida Panthers after being implicated in the Chicago Blackhawks’ cover up of the Brad Aldrich sex scandal in 2010.

On Thursday, Darren Dreger provided the latest update in Quenneville’s future in the NHL as he explained on Insider Trading on TSN.

“We know that Joel has been working with Kim Davis, the executive vice president of the National Hockey League for quite some time, most of this season in fact and he’s scheduled to do a call with American Hockey League coaches next month to share some of the lessons that he has learned. Meanwhile, Stan Bowman, former general manager of the Blackhawks, has also been working with Kim Davis, but he also continues to work alongside Sheldon Kennedy and the Respect Group. Both of these guys, Bowman and Quenneville, are hopeful they will get back in the National Hockey League, but for the moment they are happy to be involved with the process that they are.”

While Quenneville will have to prove to potential interest teams that he has changed his controversial ways, there is no arguing over his talents as a head coach of the game. He is the second-winningest coach in NHL history, his 969 victories trailing only the 1,244 amassed by Scotty Bowman.

With the end of the season approaching and teams out of the playoff picture looking at possible replacement behind the bench, these clubs could look into Quenneville and his work with Davis to determine if he is indeed ready to return to the NHL.
