New York Rangers Find Their Replacement for Shesterkin On Sunday.

The New York Rangers have found their replacement for injured star goaltender Igor Shesterkin in a very unlikely place.

According to multiple reports on Sunday, the Rangers have officially signed veteran National Hockey League goaltender James Reimer, bringing Reimer out of what seemed like a potential retirement and back to the NHL for at least one more season.

Reimer was unsigned after the 2025-26 NHL season, one in which he had a brief 14 game stint with the Ottawa Senators, and it looked like Reimer had reached the end of his NHL road. Unfortunately for the Rangers however the injury to Shesterkin prompted them to sign Reimer to a tryout at the American Hockey League level, with their AHL affiliate the Hartforward WolfPack, and Reimer has exceeded all expectations.

The 38 year old veteran goaltender appeared in just a single game and stopped every single shot he faced, positing a perfect shutout in his rather impressive tryout. He was the oldest goaltender to do so in the AHL in nearly 2 decades.

It is that tryout that has earned him this NHL contract and it sounds like the plan moving forward for the Rangers will be to use Reimer in combination with Dylan Garand who has looked excellent since Shesterkin was injured.

As I mentioned Reimer's most recent experience was with the Senators last season and he didn't have the best result during his time with Ottawa, a 2.42 goals against average and a .886 save percentage over that 14 game sample size.
