The Vancouver Canucks were somewhat active during the latest NHL trade deadline, moving defenseman Erik Gudbranson and prospect Jonathan Dahlen on the last day of action.

While Gudbranson seems to be enjoying himself with his new team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, Dahlen revealed he has been forced to close his social media accounts due to some hateful messages from Canucks fans, according to the Swedish publication HockeyNews

When Dahlen was moved to the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline in exchange for Linus Karlsson, Canucks general manager Jim Benning stated the move was made at the request of the player’s agent.

However, Dahlen denies he asked for the trade and said that the suggestion he did made him a target of angry Canucks fans on Twitter and Instagram, prompting him to shut down all of his accounts.

“I find it difficult to get messages from Vancouver fans. They have written very hateful messages and it ended with me removing both Twitter and Instagram. I have tried to keep myself in the dark now and focused on trying to feel a bit better,” Dahlen told Vancouver-based reporter Tobias Dahlberg.
“I actually chose not to be traded. I didn’t want to move.”

However, the Canucks wanted a fresh start for the young winger, seeing that he was unhappy with his development in Utica.

“It feels like I have been trampled rather than lifted. Instead of becoming a better hockey player, it has gone in the opposite direction. I have not been able to do anything offensive without being afraid of being counted if I make a mistake,” he said.

Dahlen had tallied 14 goals in 50 games with the Comets this season and has now posted three assists in his first three contests with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda.

Fans often used social media to reveal how they truly feel about a trade or a signing, however, this seems to have gone too far for Dahlen. He might be able to focus on his game, now that all distraction have been removed…
