The 2025-26 National Hockey League regular season has gone poorly up to this point for the Toronto Maple Leafs and as a result there is now rampant talk of the team preparing to sell ahead of the NHL's trade deadline. While that may seem like a prudent decision to many fans, the real question is can this current Maple Leafs' front office be trusted to properly manage the team's assets?

Recently one of the moves made by Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has come under serious scrutiny, with fans and pundits alike concerned that Treliving may have come out on the losing end of a trade with a divisional rival. That deal is of course the trade that saw Maple Leafs prospect Fraser Minten dealt to Boston alongside a first round draft selection in exchange for Bruins defenseman Brandon Carlo.

If we just look at the two players things already don't look so favorable for the Leafs, with Minten having a great season with the Bruins, recording 14 goals and 15 assists for 29 points in 55 regular season games. Minten has received praise for his solid two way play this season, a stark contrast to the narrative around Carlo.

Carlo has been heavily criticized for his lack of physical play, especially when it comes to sticking up for his goaltenders, and has just 4 points on the season through 32 games. Unfortunately for Carlo, his lackluster play this season has all but cemented the narrative around this trade.

"The Leafs got fleeced, there's no other way to put it," said Bryan Hayes this past week. "The trade is gonna look worse and worse and worse."

As it turns out Bryan Hayes words would prove to be rather prescient, with the NHL announcing on Sunday that Minten was being named the NHL's rookie of the month. Over the last 14 games Minten has recorded 8 goals and 6 assists for a total of 14 point, and certainly seems to be playing like a man determined to prove to the Maple Leafs that they made the wrong choice.
