NHL announces it's first major gambling sponsorship.
MGM Grand

The National Hockey League has announced a major sponsorship and it's one that will likely bring a lot of exciting new information to the fingertips of NHL fans.

On Monday morning National Hockey League commissioner Gary Bettman announced that league had finalized a sponsorship deal with MGM Resorts International as it pertains to both sports gambling. Not only will MGM become an officially partnered sports book of the NHL but they will also become an official resort destination of the league as well, however the interesting details of this deal lay beyond the surface level sponsorship.

As part of MGM's new relationship with the NHL they will now receive access to previously unseen and enhanced NHL proprietary game data that will come from state of the art tracking technology that is currently being developed by the NHL. What's particularly interesting here is that this data, or at least some of it, will be made public by MGM for their clientele and this likely means that fans of the National Hockey League, both those who bets as well as those who do not, will soon have access to brand new, never before seen, statistical data that will further their understanding of the game and how it unfolds.

Now of course MGM's primary focus will be to provide this data to their client's in an effort to encourage additional betting on NHL games and no doubt some of that data will be kept under wraps in an effort to maxiomize the profits of the sportsbook. that being said though the technology being devleoped to track this data likely would have never been developed had the NHL not intended to move towards this type of sponsorship deal.

One last interesting detail from this particular story, it appears that the sponsorship between the National Hockey League and MGM Resorts will not be an exclusive one. This indicates that Bettman and the NHL owners are looking to maximize this new profit avenue by selling their data to as many sports books as they can, so there may be further announcements of this nature coming in the near future. If the data is indeed purchased by other organizations this will likely result in it being available to fans that much quicker.
