The NHL and NHLPA released a joint statement announcing that the World Cup of Hockey, last held in the fall of 2016, will NOT take place in 2020, as was previously believed.

And the NHLPA’s statement:

The 2016 World Cup of Hockey, which was held over a decade after the previous tournament, was held in Toronto’s Air Canada Centre (now ScotiaBank Arena) with Canada coming away as the winners, with captain Sidney Crosby capturing MVP honors.

The tournament featured the WILDLY popular Team North America with Connor McDavid, Auston Matthews, Jack Eichel, Johnny Gaudreau and other NHL stars under the age of 23. Team Europe was also a unique addition to the tournament and ended up making an unheralded run to the championship game against Canada.

Both the league and the Players’ Association have agreed to continue discussions for a tournament at a later date but… let’s be real… the World Cup is dead. It’s always been a step child to the Olympics and the 2016 was CLEARLY just a cash grab for the league and its owners to the point where fans labelled it the “NHL Invitational sponsored by Rogers and Bridgestone Tires.”
