Over 20 years ago the NHL instituted a highly-controversial technology into hockey broadcasting - the glowing puck. This technology was used on Fox networks and was the subject of controversy from TV viewers.

Along with NHL's partnership termination with Fox, the glowing puck idea was scrapped.

However, recently, Gary Bettman alluded to the idea that the glowing puck could make its return.

"While it was the subject of much discussion, and some derision, in 1996, the technology of Fox Sports' glowing puck was the precursor of the first-down line that has become standard practice for any football broadcast, and any number of innovations," said Bettman as per ESPN. "Actually, we are working on a dramatically updated version of that technology, and we have plans to roll out updated player and puck tracking. We are literally going back to the future."

A Twitter user edited some recent game footage to show what this could look like, for those who had never seen the glowing puck.

What do you think? The NHL, we imagine, would implement a much cleaner version of this animation - would you like this idea?
