If you thought the NHL regular season was already long and demanding on the players, wait and see what Larry Brooks of the New York Post is reporting. While it’s been confirmed that the salary cap would increase to $83.5 millions next season, Brooks believes the NHLPA is willing to discuss an 84-game schedule, in hopes of increasing the salary cap more than the prescribed $1 million.

The union is now open to adding two games to the season because it is “not willing to raise the escrow ceiling of six percent for each of the next three seasons as a trade-off for elevating the cap above $83.5 million.”

The NHL and NHLPA, who are set to meet this week to go over a variety of topics, could agree to shorten training camp to make room for the additional two games on the regular schedule.

For most fans, the regular season is already too long as it is. But this could be the way to get both sides on board for additional money. I would also consider a shorter preseason… let’s see what the consensus will be after that aforementioned meeting.
