Get ready for a splash on the trade market!
There is a growing sense in the NHL that what the Vancouver Canucks got in return for Bo Horvat will become a model for Timo Meier and the San Jose Sharks ahead of the trade deadline.
“Probably a very similar deal as to the Bo Horvat trade,” an NHL executive from outside of the Sharks organization told the San Jose Hockey Now, about a potential return in a potential trade for Meier.
On Monday, the Canucks sent Horvat tp the New York Islanders in return for Anthony Beauvillier, Aatu Raty and a protected 2023 first-round draft pick. That 2023 first-round pick becomes an unprotected 2024 first-rounder if the Islanders’ 2023 is in the top-12.
Meier, who is a pending free agent, is on pace for 45 goals and will be highly coveted ahead of March 3rd. If the Sharks are indeed seeking a similar asking price than what the Canucks got for Horvat, that means a protected first-round pick, a Grade-B prospect, and a solid and a young NHL player. Some say this is on the low-end of what the Sharks might actually demand since GM Mike Grier was once believed to be looking for “a first-rounder — and one Grade-A or two Grade-B prospects, or one good prospect and a young, established NHL player” for Meier.
However, a return like the one Vancouver got for Horvat appears to be more realistic.
Before the deal was done with New York, Horvat was also linked to the Boston Bruins, Colorado Avalanche, Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets, who could turn to Meier. The New Jersey Devils are also believed to be front-runners in these sweepstakes.
Will they pay the price though?
