NHL expansion just took its biggest step yet with construction underway

For years, the push to bring the NHL back to Atlanta has been fueled largely by hope and speculation. But a new development out of Forsyth County, Georgia, may represent the most tangible step forward the movement has ever seen.

According to the NHL to Atlanta account on X, the development group behind The Gathering at South Forsyth revealed in a community email that it has secured financing for an NHL franchise and submitted a final approval packet. The same communication reportedly confirmed that the first phase of construction began on September 1st, 2026.

A local contractor has been tasked with grading and leveling the site, with that work expected to run through January 31st, 2027. Once the ground is prepared, construction on the arena and surrounding buildings is set to begin, with an estimated timeline of 27 months to complete.

The broader mixed-use development is expected to be built out in phases over a span of seven to ten years. If the arena is finished on schedule around May 2029, a team could theoretically take the ice for the 2029-30 NHL season.

One detail stands out as particularly significant. According to a memorandum of understanding with Forsyth County, the arena could not be included in the first construction phase without NHL approval. The fact that arena work is moving forward suggests, at least indirectly, that there may be some level of league engagement.

That said, the NHL itself has not confirmed that a franchise is being awarded to the Atlanta area. The league has made no public comment on the matter, and the information so far comes solely from the development team's communication to nearby residents.

Reaction online was swift. Some longtime followers of the Atlanta expansion effort expressed disbelief at seeing concrete progress after years of waiting. Others noted a preference for a competing proposal in Alpharetta but said they would support any path that ultimately delivers a team. A few remained cautious, pointing out that the update, while encouraging, still lacks official league confirmation.

The development in South Forsyth represents the clearest sign yet that an NHL return to the Atlanta metro area could be more than just a dream. Whether the league makes it official remains the biggest outstanding question, but only time will tell…
