The NHL is now closely monitoring the situation.
The National Hockey League is reportedly closely monitoring a situation that could cause one of this weekend's games to be canceled as a result of mother nature.
According to a report from Minnesota Wild insider Michael Russo, the Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs and the league itself are all currently in contact with one another as they seek to determine the best course of action when it comes to the game scheduled between the Maple Leafs and Wild at the Grand Casino Arena in Minnesota on Sunday night.
The state of Minnesota is currently under a major winter storm warning with that warning in effect from 7:00 pm Saturday all the way through 7:00 am on Monday morning. Reports indicate that the weather is expected to be so severe as to make travel extremely difficult or even impossible, putting the game on Sunday night in jeopardy. In fact airlines at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport have already begun offering waivers for flights booked on both Saturday and Sunday.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled as a result.
According to Russo it sounds like the plan may be for the Maple Leafs to attempt to beat out the storm by immediately traveling from Buffalo to Minnesota following their game against the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday night.
Whether or not that will be possible has yet to be determined with the NHL likely to make the final decision when they have more information closer to travel time.
The Maple Leafs are already well out of the playoff race but that isn't the case for the Wild who are still battling the Dallas Stars for position in the NHL's Central Division standings. As a result this is a game that could have playoff implications, making the fate of this game all that much more important.
