There are trade rumors flying all over the National Hockey League and this despite the fact that were are in the middle of the Stanley Cup Final.
This has been by and large due to the fact that Las Vegas will be entering the National Hockey League next season, and as a result nearly every NHL general manager has been flooded with questions on the topic.
One of the most interesting answers however gave from Arizona Coyotes GM John Cayka when he was asked if he would be able to trading veteran goaltender Mike Smith. While Chayka made it clear that the rumors weren't coming from him, he admitted there was a possibility for a move for the right price.
“If it’s being viewed as me making Mike available and starting a bidding war, that’s not the case,” he said as per Arizona Sports. “We’re taking calls on players every year. I don’t think anyone is untradeable but like we talked about last year with Oliver Ekman-Larsson, he’s up as high on that list as anyone.
“There’s a value to our team that Mike has, being an All-Star and our rock. His value is extremely high but if someone wants to pay an even higher value for him, that’s the industry.”
It's not just that Chayka believes Smith is an incredibly valuable piece of his organization, it's that he knows it would leave a huge hole on his roster with quality goaltending being a rarity NHL level.
“Goaltending is such a premium position and Mike was as good as anyone in the league last year,” Chayka said.
With that in mind there are a number of team's looking to improve in goal and with Ben Bishop already off the market, that leaves limited options.
