Last night a big rumor leaked from a Kontinental Hockey League insider suggesting that the Buffalo Sabres were set to name their next captain, and although those rumors weren't confirmed, the circumstances seemed to support it.

According to the source the next captain was set to be young superstar Jack Eichel, and while Eichel was not named the team's captian he signed a contract worth a whopping $80 million shortly after that rumor broke, with his agent saying he left money on the table to help the franchise.

As you would expect this only lent more weight to the rumor and as a result on Wednesday Buffalo Sabres general manager Jason Botterill publicly responded to the talk of Eichel being the next captain.

According to ESPN insider Pierre LeBrun, Botterill has informed him that the Sabres will not be naming a captain to start the regular season, however he did add the caveat that he would see how things go from there.

While this may initially read like a denial from Botterill, it may be just a matter of time before the official announcement comes down.
