A huge shakeup in the NHL after a general manager steps down.
A major shakeup is coming to the National Hockey League.
Although there has been no official announcement at the time of this writing, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman broke the news on Monday morning that Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz will be stepping down today.
The news comes as a surprise given that Trotz is an incredibly well respected figure with the NHL and the hockey community, however Trotz earned that respect as an excellent NHL coach and not as a general manager. Since taking over the reigns of the Nashville Predators, Trotz's tenure has been marred by questionable moves and asset management.
There is no single example greater than the 2024 free agency period, a period of time where the moves from Trotz generated a ton of excitement. Trotz signed the likes of Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault to lucrative new contracts, but while the moves looked good on paper they would result in disaster on the ice for the Predators. The Predators would finish the 2024-25 regular season second to last in the NHL's Central Division despite their big moves, finishing with an ugly record of 30-44-8.
Although things have gone better this season the Predators still find themselves in the bottom half of the NHL's Central Division and are currently out of a playoff position.
Unfortunately for Trotz his first tenure as an NHL GM will likely not be remembered as a success.
