TSN writer Travis Yost posited an interesting theory on social media this morning when he proposed that the Vegas Golden Knights may in fact not select 22 year-old defenseman Matt Dumba from the Minnesota Wild, as has been widely speculated. Who then might Vegas general manager George McPhee select? How about top line center Eric Staal?

Yost makes the argument for Staal in Sin City mostly because, while the Golden Knights will have opportunities to grab good defensemen from other teams, Staal represents the only number one center option in the entire expansion draft. While there’s no doubt that Staal is not the dominant goal scorer that he once was, he still managed 28 goals and 65 points with the Wild last season, good enough for tops on the team.

The question is, with 10 years separating Dumba and Staal, can Vegas afford to pass on a young, potential top pairing blue liner? Speculation will continue, but we’ll know the answer by tomorrow evening.
