Could we finally see a blockbuster trade this offseason?
According to a report from former Sportsnet insider Jeff Marek, things might be finally coming to a head between the Dallas Stars and star forward Jason Robertson.
The 26 year old Robertson is entering the final year of a four year deal that pays him $7.75 million per season and there have been reports that the team isn't keen on extending Robertson at an increased cap hit.
While a guest on the DLLS Stars Podcast earlier this week Marek reported that Mikko Rantanen's $12 million salary is the upper limit for the team and that they won't break that mark for Robertson, which could lead to an impasse.
From Marek:
"I'm of the belief that Mikko Rantanen's contract is the ceiling for forwards, for this team. I don't think Jim Nill is going to put the Stars in a situation where they get..."Marner'd"...where Robertson plays the year out and walks."
So, if I'm reading between the lines here Marek is reporting that the Stars are likely to trade Robertson ahead of the trade deadline if they can't get him signed to a deal under $12 million annually. GM Jim Nill isn't interested in losing Robertson for nothing like the Leafs lost Mitch Marner for nothing.
Interestingly enough, Robertson seems like a perfect fit for the Leafs. They could use some scoring to replace the now departed Marner and Robertson's brother is an emerging player for the Leafs. Could this work out for both sides?
