A swap of underperforming netminders!?
Hey, I'm not sure if you've heard about this, but the Edmonton Oilers need a new starting goaltender.
Goaltending has been an issue for the Edmonton Oilers this season.
Just as it was last season. And the season before. And the season before. And the season before.
In fact, for Connor McDavid's entire career, the Oilers have had a problem with their goaltending. The last time the team had true stability in net was probably under Dwayne Roloson. For a true star goaltender in Edmonton though you probably have to go back to the late 1990's when they employed Curtis Joseph between the pipes.
Something's gotta give... right?
NHL insider Nick Kypreos reported earlier today that Oilers GM Stan Bowman has shown interest in St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington and that a potential swap of goaltenders could be coming.
From Kypreos for Sportsnet earlier today:
The strongest speculation ties Binnington to Edmonton, and that the Oilers are also seeing if they can get a defenceman out of St. Louis at the same time. That potential deal would most likely be built around Stuart Skinner going back to St. Louis to team up with Hofer.
The Oilers would have to clear some salary cap space to make this deal happen, which is an important aspect of this that Kypreos tends to ignore.
Do I put much stock in this trade? I dunno...
Kypreos doesn't have the best track record in recent years and seems to simply peddle mostly in just speculation these days. This trade also has the potential to completely backfire for the Oilers. With how he's been playing this season, does Binnington actually represent an upgrade over Skinner? There's a very real possibility that the Oilers actually get worse goaltending as a result of this trade at a higher cap hit.
Thoughts, Oilers fans?
