Tortorella may not be in Vegas for very long.
The shocking news that highly controversial National Hockey League head coach John Tortorella was back behind the bench of a playoff bound team left many stunned. On Sunday, the Golden Knights made the surprising move of firing their Stanley Cup winning head coach, Bruce Cassidy, with only a few games remaining in the regular season.
That announcement left many of their own fans surprised, but what the Golden Knights didn't announce however was the length of Tortorella's new deal... and perhaps for good reason.
NHL insider Darren Dreger has just revealed a shocking detail about the Golden Knights hiring of Tortorella, with the insider claiming that Tortorella's new contract only covers what remains of the regular season and the Stanley Cup playoffs.
That news has since been confirmed by veteran NHL reporter John Shannon, who reports that Tortorella's contract covers just 8 regular season games and the playoffs. According to Shannon, any decisions about Tortorella's future beyond this current season will be made at the end of the playoffs.
It's a risky move for Tortorella who has joined a team that has been imploding since the Olympic break and now finds itself in real danger of missing the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Los Angeles Kings are just 4 points back of the Golden Knights while the Seattle Kraken are 5 points back, with both teams having fewer games played than the Golden Knights. Should the Golden Knights continue to falter, this could be a very ugly and very short tenure for Tortorella.
