Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for the Detroit Red Wings.
If you're anything like me you were absolutely floored this summer when the Detroit Red Wings failed to sign defenseman Simon Edvinsson to an 8 year contract prior to the deadline for those type of contracts in the National Hockey League expiring.
Rumors at the time suggested that the Red Wings brass was more comfortable with a bridge deal, a ridiculous notion in the current world of the rapidly rising salary cap, but a notion that the Red Wings front office has seemingly held firm on.
Now reports suggest that Edvinsson is the latest player to want out of Detroit, requesting a trade from the Red Wings, and NHL insider Elliotte Friedman just revealed the awful details behind why he feels that way.
"It was only a matter of time until this got out, his unhappiness," said Friedman on the 32 Thoughts podcast. "I just think he showed up, he believed it was gonna get done, and then when it didn't get done I heard he was pretty mad."
While for us it may sound like a ridiculous way to treat a player who is supposed to be one of the cornerstones of your young core over a single summer, for Edvinsson the frustration has been bubbling for far more than just a few weeks or months.
"He went back to Sweden and I heard he made it clear he wanted to be left alone for a bit, and had enough that it's taken this long," revealed Friedman. "It's not just the fact that it didn't get done during training camp, it didn't get done all summer, he's been eligible for an extension for the last 15 months. He's just fed up it's taken this long."
While it sounds like the Red Wings very much want to try to hold on to Edvinsson, it sounds like they may realize that may no longer be possible as well.
"Detroit has maintained in the last couple of days that they are going to sign Edvinsson and they are going to get this done, but I also do believe they have gauged his market," revealed Friedman.
What a disaster.
