NHL insider suggests the Leafs could land John Tavares

We cannot afford to lose him...

Even the National Hockey League, timing is everything! And it could be a good thing for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but a bad one for the New York Islanders.

According to Craig Button of TSN, the Leafs could jump on the opportunity of signing John Tavares for a one-year contract, seeing that young players like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are still on entry-level deals.

Tavares is entering the final season of his six-year, $33 million deal, and Button can already picture powerful three sets of forwards on the Leafs' lineup: Matthews and William Nylander, Marner and Tavares, and Nazem Kadri and Connor Brown.

"That's a pretty good one-two-three when you consider duos, and John Tavares could fit in," Button added on TSN radio.

Tavares would fit in in any team of the NHL, but Button mentioned that he would be a good fit for the Leafs' salary structure, seeing that superstars Matthews and Marner are still a great bargain.

Tavares became eligible to sign an extension on July 1 and while rumours placed terms at approximately eight years and 80$ millions for a new deal, there has seemingly been little progress made with the Isles for now.

"In one year, you've got the possibility of making Tavares the best one-year offer," Michael Landsberg commented on Button's theory.
