Are the Oilers heading for another decade of darkness?

The Edmonton Oilers are in a tailspin, having dropped their 11th game of the season last night at the hands of last season's Eastern Conference champion Florida Panthers.

It's a stunning turn of events for the franchise that many had picked to finally win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1990 after the dynamic duo of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl gave opposition goaltenders everywhere serious cases of sunburn on the backs of their necks, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins reached the 100-point plateau himself.

Is Draisaitl, who happens to be a free-agent following the conclusion of next season, already plotting his escape if the Oilers can't turn things around? That's more than a remote possibility, according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.

During an appearance on "The Jeff Marek Show", Friedman floated the possibility that the premier German forward could already be envisioning himself playing elsewhere, especially if this stunning collapse of the Oilers continues.

"Sooner or later you start to look at the long-term picture, like uh oh, Draisaitl, what's he thinking right now? I don't believe you're there yet, but it's there, it's not too far into the horizon if this doesn't turn around."
