NHL insiders share a difference of opinion on the likelihood of a McDavid trade demand.

One insider believes it is not far off.

There has been a ton of talk all week about the possibility of a blockbuster trade demand coming from, arguably, the best hockey player on the planet in Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

Now I must admit that given the nature of those rumors, seeming to be nothing but pure speculation from various outlets, I have been very skeptical of taking any of it seriously. That being said though on Saturday night two of the National Hockey League's top insiders commented on the current situation in Edmonton, specifically as it pertains to the possibility of a trade demand.

The first insider to speak was Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman, and his take on the entire situation was more in line with my thought process this week. Friedman was quick to dismiss the notion that McDavid would ask for a trade demand in the immediate future, although even he made it clear that time was limited for the Oilers here.

"You know I think there were some people who wondered does that mean he's gonna ask for a trade now? That's not the case," said Friedman. "I don't think anybody is expecting that. I think what were looking at though is the Oilers know they've got a couple of years to go in the right direction."

Friedman appeared as though he had more to add on the topic but it was when he mentioned the word "years" that Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Nick Kypreos felt the need to cut him off. Now to be clear this is not normal behavior on the headlines panel and it seems to me like Kypreos felt very strongly that Friedman was giving out bad information on this front. I may be reading too much into what was a minor exchange between the two men, but Kypreos comments left nothing to the imagination.

"No. They've got a couple of months to get that roster to look much differently by training camp," said Kypreos after cutting off Friedman.]

The implication here, as crazy as it may seem, is clearly that the Oilers have no time at all to turn things around before McDavid demands to be shipped out of town. Kypreos it seems genuinely believes that is what it will take to make McDavid happy.

"I think that is what Connor McDavid would like to see."
