Are they over reacting?

National Hockey League and Toronto Maple Leafs fans will agree: Auston Matthews is one of the best things to happen to the team in a long time.

The Hockey News seem to agree and recently ranked Matthews as the eighth best player in the NHL.

However, not every NHL insider think the magazine was right to give him that ranking. Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star and Mark Roe of SportsCentre discussed on TSN radio that Matthews may not be ready just yet to get the eighth position overall.

"If we're talking today, it is too high. If we talk at the end of the season, I think it's just right," Roe added.

Matthews sits just behind Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, Erik Karlsson, Patrick Kane, Carey Price, Sergei Bobrovsky and Evgeni Malkin in the ranking.

"I think as of today it's too high, because those guys are all guys who could carry a franchise in a way that I don't think Matthews can yet," Arthur commented. "In Toronto, it's easy to get over-excited about players and we do it all the time. Auston Matthews, last year, was I think better than it looks."

What do you think Leafs fans?

In 82 games in his first NHl season, Matthews scored 40 goals and recorded a total of 69 points. Worthy of the eighth best player in the NHL?
