NHL makes controversial call on Ospoko’s hit on Dermott

The focus might be on Auston Matthews this morning, he who scored twice as the Maple Leafs dominated early before having to hang on late in a 5-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, but fans are also upset about another incident that took place in the contest.

While fans are thrilled that Matthews became the second player in franchise history to score at least 20 goals in each of his first four NHL seasons, they are also stunned by the mediocre state of NHL officiating that was exposed some more last night when Sabres’ Kyle Okposo drilled Travis Dermott into the boards.

It appears that the hit took place away from the play, enough that the officials on the ice didn’t penalized Okposo for his dangerous move. But you have to admit it sure looks like boarding and interference to most hockey fans.

To make things worse for the Leafs, Sabres captain Jack Eichel scored quickly after the hit to cut Toronto’s lead to 2.

In the end, the Leafs got away with the win, but it remains hard for fans to accept the controversial call made by the referees.

Many believe this could have been a suspendible hit as Philadelphia Flyers’ Joel Farabee was banned three games for a similar hit on Winnipeg Jets’ Mathieu Perreault. However, it was revealed that there would be no supplementary discipline for Okposo's late hit on Dermott last night.
