Here’s something you never thought you’d read about the National Hockey League. According to Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek of the 32 Thoughts podcast on Sportsnet, the NHL is looking at ways to include alligators in the 2023 All-Star Outdoor Event in Florida.
Steve Mayer, the NHL’s chief content officer, was a guest on the podcast and mentioned how the event in Fort Lauderdale will be a very Florida-centric event. The league wishes the marry the beach and the ice thanks to one of the area’s most famous local animals.
“In Florida we’re taking over the beach,” Mayer said of the 32 Thoughts podcast. “We’re literally taking over all the Fort Lauderdale Beach. We’re going to do concerts, we’re going to do fanfare, which is typically in a convention centre. We’re going to do it all on the sand.”
As Ian Kennedy of the Hockey News points out: "Ah yes. The NHL thought, ‘you know who we haven’t angered, animal rights activists.’
Will they be saucer passing frozen hamburgers over a pond?"
This does not sound like a great idea…
The event will take place Feb. 3-4, 2023. The league still has time to rethink this idea. They might also have to deal with weather delays, the ice melting and officials finding it too dangerous to skate onto. Wanna add alligators in the mix?
