We all knew the qualifying round would be condensed in a packed schedule, however, it sounds like the National Hockey League was finally forced to make a significant change to ice surface in Edmonton in order to keep players safe.

Edmonton Oilers forward Alex Chiasson admitted on Thursday that the NHL has has made ice “thicker” in Edmonton in order to handle the frequency of games and outdoor heat.

After the first day of action in Toronto during the three-day period of exhibitions games, Philadelphia Flyers’ Sean Couturier and Kevin Hayes were quick to criticize the quality of the ice in the Eastern Conference hub city.

Couturier even expressed some concern for the next game to come, as the Montreal Canadiens faced the Toronto Maple Leafs on that same ice later that same day.

“It was all right. Wasn’t the best, but I’ve seen worse in the league. It’s the same for every team. I wonder about the second game (Leafs - Habs tonight), but in May and June it can get ugly and that’s no different here.”

The event planning in Toronto to welcome 12 teams of the Eastern Conference happened quite quickly over the course of the past few weeks and some fans are starting to wonder if something wasn’t done properly to the ice.

The same thing became a concern in Edmonton, the host city of the 12 teams of the Western Conference, but it sounds like the NHL got on top of it.

Now, we wonder - has the same been done in Toronto?
