NHL/NHLPA considering stoppage that could have major impact on Canadian teams.
This could disproportionately impact Canadian teams.
The National Hockey League is currently considering a proposal that could have a drastic impact on Canadian teams moving forward over the coming days.
The news comes to us courtesy of NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, and Friedman is reporting that both the league and the National Hockey League Players Association are currently weighing the possibility of stopping all cross border travel ahead of Christmas. The change would effectively prevent teams from the United States of America from traveling to Canada, but it would also prevent Canadian teams from playing out games in the United States.
Given that there are a very disproportionate number of teams in the United States, it seems likely that this change would disproportionately impact Canadian teams as well. Of course it has to be said that some Canadian teams have already been shut down regardless of this new proposal, and just earlier today we heard rumblings that the Winnipeg Jets will soon be added to that list.
Additionally Friedman believes that this decision from the league and the players could come alongside a decision to pull out of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, China, something that has been rumored since the number of positive cases in the NHL started exploding over the last week or so.
Update: The NHL has now officially confirmed the suspension of border travel until at least the 23rd of December.
Update: Friedman now seems confident that the Olympics will be played without NHL player representation, he expects an official announcement in that regard in the next few days.
