National Hockey League referee Wes McCauley has been one of the more controversial officials in the league throughout his career, at least from the perspective of the fans on the outside looking in, and on Friday night McCauley once again found himself at the center of controversy after a controversial call by NHL officials drastically changed the momentum of a game.

The incident in question would occur during the 2nd period of Friday night's clash between the Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings, and it would involve what was initially a goal from Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider.

Seider appeared to pick up a big rebound off his skate, redirecting the puck to his stick, before tapping it in the net to tie the game between the Red Wings and Ducks early in the game's second period. Although the goal was initially allowed, upon review McCauley would make the following announcement:

"After review of the play it was determined that the puck was kicked in the net, therefore there is no goal," announced McCauley.

Here is a look at the replay:

A closer look at the video replay shows that Seider fanned on the puck with his stick, twice in fact, never making contact again after the puck had bounced of his skate. In spite of that it was clear that many felt the video did not show enough to overturn what had initially been ruled a good goal, with most arguing that Seider had not kicked the puck but merely deflected it with the blade of his skate.

Some even offered up theories as to why they think the call went the way that it did.

The NHL has since released an official explanation of their ruling:
Video review determined that Detroit’s Moritz Seider kicked the puck into the Anaheim net. According to Rule 49.2, "A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net with his skate/foot."

Is the controversy justified? Did referee Wes McCauley get this one wrong? Or do you agree with the call after having had a chance to review the video yourself? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
