It sounds like multiple players are headed for a suspension following last night's game.
To the surprise of absolutely no one who witnessed the carnage that occurred between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers on Saturday night, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety is getting involved.
In a game that featured a staggering 16 ejections and over 300 penalty minutes there were plenty of moments for the Department of Player Safety to choose from but it seems that they felt two in particular crossed a line that warrants additional discipline.
The first announcement from the NHL's Department of Player Safety was in regards to the incident that occurred between Lightning forward Scott Sabourin and Aaron Ekblad. In the early moments of the game Ekblad was dropped by a single punch from Sabourin, which would lead to Ekblad leaving the game. Ekblad would not return to the contest which led to a great deal of outrage from Panthers' fans on social media and, given that Sabourin is not an NHL regular, it comes as little surprise to see the league step in here.
Unfortunately for the Lightning the second announcement also sees another of their players facing a hearing, with J.J. Moser facing additional discipline for boarding Jesper Boqvist during the game. It was a nasty hit form behind that drove Boqvist head first into the boards, definitely the kind of dangerous play that NHL Player Safety has been cracking down on in recent years.
Despite these interventions from the NHL's Department of Player Safety I don't think we've seen the last of the bad blood between these two teams, especially not when you consider that Saturday night's contest got as nasty as it did during a game that doesn't even count in the grand scheme of things.
