NHL Player Safety Comes Down On Mike Matheson Over Wild Sucker Punch On Ridley Greig.

The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has come down on Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson, and it should come as no surprise given what we saw transpire on Saturday night.

Ottawa Senators forward Ridley Greig has made quite a reputation for himself and his ability to get under the skin of his opposition, and it seems he put that skill to good use on Matheson on Saturday night. Matheson completely snapped at one point, delivering a shot right to Greig's face and knocking him down to the ice in the process.

If that had been the extent of things Matheson may very well have skated away without being disciplined by the league, but unfortunately he had completely lost his cool and would continue his attack on Greig even after Greig was already down. What followed was a massive overhand shot from Matheson as he came crashing down on top of Greig, one that clearly caught the Senators forward right in the head.

The visual was unmistakable and, even though there are no doubt many fans who will celebrate seeing a player like Greig on the receiving end of a hit like this, it was clear the NHL would have to step in. Luckily for Matheson he gets away with nothing more than a fine for this infraction, and I think he'll be happy walking away from this one without missing any games.
