NHL Player Safety issues ruling on Matt Rempe's controversial hit.
The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has made its decision.
The Nashville Predators likely aren't going to be very happy with this decision.
On Sunday night, the Predators faced off against the New York Rangers and it would be the opening minutes of that game's first period that Rangers enforcer Matt Rempe would make his presence felt.
Rempe delivered a heavy hit to Predators defenseman Nick Blankenburg, a hit that the Predators appeared to feel should have resulted in a significant penalty for Rempe. Rempe did appear to have his arm up as he came in for the hit, but the most severe consequence that Rempe would face was one heck of a hockey fight against Predators defenseman Andreas Englund.
According to Rangers insider Vince Z. Mercogliano, it appears as though the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety agrees that a 2 minute minor penalty was all Rempe deserved for the infraction, with the disciplinary arm of the league opting to not discipline Rempe any further.
According to Mercogliano, Player Safety felt that Rempe was "bracing" himself for impact along the boards which is why his arm came up, although I suspect that the Predators may not be pleased with that explanation.
If you haven't seen the hit in question, here's a look at the replay:
Did NHL Player Safety make the right call? Or should Rempe have received more discipline for the hit? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
