NHL Player Safety shares official update on controversial Zegras hit.

NHL Player Safety makes an official announcement regarding last night's controversial hit.

To the surprise of no one who watched this happen live on Sunday night, it sounds very much like Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras is about to get an involuntary vacation from playing in the National Hockey League.

Although it seems like the vast majority of observers who saw the hit would have predicted Zegras was headed for supplemental discipline, the NHL's Department of Player Safety made it official on Monday morning when they announced that Zegras would be facing a hearing that very same day.

The league's decision to move quickly here suggest to me that Zegras will without a doubt be suspended, with the league likely wanted to get this wrapped up before the Ducks face off against the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday.

The league will officially be disciplining Zegras under the "interference" rule, which to me is a bad sign as it points to the fact that the league will be weighing the second most damning part of this hit against Zegras. The main issue with the hit is of course that Zegras picked the head of Detroit Red Wings defenseman Michael Rasmussen, but additionally the hit also came long after Rasmussen had gotten rid of the puck making it a late hit as well.

If you happened to miss the hit last night don't worry I've got you covered, you can see a rather conclusive replay of the incident in the short clip below, a clip that leaves no doubt that Rasmussen's head was the only point of contact on this hit.
