NHL Prospect Shares Girlfriend's Stage 4 Cancer Diagnosis in Emotional Message

With NHL training camps set to open in just over a week, most prospects are laser-focused on earning a roster spot. But for Nashville Predators prospect Austin Roest, hockey has taken a back seat to something far more important. The 22-year-old forward took to Instagram on September 4 to share devastating news about the person closest to him, and the hockey world has rallied behind him in a way that reminds us all why this sport's community is so special.

Roest revealed that his girlfriend, Milly Okabe, a 22-year-old former figure skater, has been diagnosed with stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a form of cancer that originates in the glandular cells lining the inside of organs. It has not been disclosed which specific organs have been affected by the disease. Alongside photos of himself at Okabe's bedside in the hospital, Roest penned a heartfelt caption expressing both his heartbreak and his unwavering belief in her strength.

"Milly, I don't even know what to say. I am so sorry this is happening to you. No one deserves to go through this," Roest wrote. "That being said, I have no doubt in my mind you will beat cancer. You are the strongest person I know and I know you will overcome everything that comes your way over the next year. I love you so much and I will be right there with you through all of this."

An Outpouring of Support From the Hockey World

Roest also directed followers to a GoFundMe campaign organized by Okabe's friend, Kristin LeDuc, to help cover treatment costs for Okabe and her family. The response has been nothing short of incredible. As of September 8, the fundraiser had already surpassed $84,000 in Canadian dollars, with donations still pouring in.

The hockey community showed up in a big way. The Predators' official Instagram account left a comment saying the organization was "sending all our love." Hockey Hall of Famer Hayley Wickenheiser offered encouraging words, writing, "You got this Milly, and Austin too. Sending healing vibes your way. Hang in there." Anaheim Ducks goaltender Lukas Dostal contributed $2,000 to the GoFundMe, while Jessica Fiala, wife of Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala, also shared words of support. Current Predators defense prospect Andrew Gibson and former Nashville forward Fedor Svechkov were among the many who engaged with the post, which has accumulated over 7,000 likes and comments.

Okabe herself also addressed the situation publicly on her own Instagram, offering a glimpse into what she is feeling as she faces this fight. "There's a lot of fear of the unknown," she wrote, "but what I do know is that I am extremely lucky in this life to have friends that are family, and a family that loves me this hard." She expressed deep gratitude for the support she has received, adding, "Thank you to everyone who has supported me in any way. I'm so extremely grateful."

The couple, both 22, have been together since 2023 and have occasionally shared moments from their relationship on social media over the years.

Roest's Hockey Journey and What Lies Ahead

For those unfamiliar with Roest's career path, the young forward was selected by Nashville in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL Draft after a standout campaign with the Everett Silvertips of the WHL, where he posted a career-best 78 points in 60 games. He went on to spend five seasons in total with the Silvertips before turning professional.

Roest signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Predators at age 20 in 2024. His first professional season was spent entirely in the minor leagues, splitting time between the AHL's Milwaukee Admirals, where he appeared in 41 games, and the ECHL's Atlanta Gladiators, where he suited up for five contests.

Nashville's training camp is scheduled to open on September 16 at Ford Ice Center Bellevue, and according to reports, Roest is expected to report. However, given the circumstances, it remains to be seen how his off-ice situation may affect his availability or focus heading into camp.
